How Therapy Works

When choosing or deciding on a particular therapeutic approach.
The decision whether a particular treatment or intervention is suitable for you, is based on a range of factors and guided by the reason help is being sought. The reasons can be specific such as phobic anxiety, bereavement, obsessional behaviour or general such as stress, anxiety, depression, and relationships. The timeframe and severity of the problem and impact on the individuals lifestyle are also factors.

All the approaches draw on theories and models of practice, each approach seeks to enable the person to understand and resolve their problem. Some approaches focus on the thinking and behaviour of the individual in seeking understanding and outcomes, other approaches by increasing awareness of the individual’s inner world and its influence on past and present relationships. By their nature some approaches are of a shorter duration whilst others require a longer duration and greater commitment by the client and therapist.

The Relationship between Therapist and Client
The therapeutic relationship is the most important aspect in therapy. The therapist provides a safe, confidential setting that supports and facilitates you the client to explore, recognise and understand the factors that exert influence on the problem, including the individuals internal psychological processes and coping strategies. And to formulate the most efficient and effective interventions, bespoke solutions to best resolve the problems.
